How to simplify a ratio
A ratio is in simplest form when all of its parts are whole numbers with no common factor greater than 1. The quickest method for an integer ratio is to find the greatest common factor (GCF), then divide every part by it.
Find the common factor. For 12:18, the greatest common factor is 6.
Divide every part by the same number. 12 ÷ 6 = 2 and 18 ÷ 6 = 3.
Write the simplified ratio. 12:18 simplifies to 2:3.
